How Do I Grow my Business – Part II
Growing a
business is a test of patience and fortitude. Many business owners over estimate what
they can accomplish in one year, and under estimate what they can accomplish in
10 years.
Case in Point: Business favors the one who goes the distance.
Here are practical actions you can execute to grow your business.
Take Your Business Seriously. When you network, think long-term. Share your intentions with your networking partner, and make sure they understand that you are 100% committed. When your network knows your level of commitment, they will feel comfortable referring you.
Follow Up on Referrals. When your referral partner
sends you a referral, please follow up within 24 hours. This protects the
reputation of your referral partner, and it shows a glimpse of what the
referral can expect if/when they become a client. No one is exempt from the
demands of life. So, if you will not be available within 24 hours, then send a
text, email, or have a quick call to let the referral know when you will be
available. This build credibility.
Communicate. Misunderstandings can occur among your
referral partners. If a referral partner does something that offends you, sends
you a “bad” referral, or cause you to have a change in heart, please
communicate as soon as possible. He or she may not be aware that he or she has
caused a problem for you. If you communicate, he or she can try to resolve the
issue. Referral networking is about relationships. Relationships are strengthened
by clear, honest, and direct communication.
Protect Your Referral Partner’s Reputation. This
commandment works hand-in-hand with “Take Your Business Seriously”. Say for
example, your referral partner sends you a referral. But later, the referral
shares negative feedback about your business. If this happens, you hurt your
referral partner’s reputation. Consider: your referral partner spent time and
energy speaking well of you. If their compliments return void, they may be viewed
as dishonest. Please do what you say you will do, and live up to the ethical
standards of your profession. Protect your referral partner’s reputation (and
your own reputation) by doing a good job.
Prepare for Success. If you really want to grow your business, then prepare to receive more business. Does your current business plan include the next steps for your company’s growth? Your referral network will do everything to ensure you get referrals on a consistent basis. Are you prepared to manage ever-increasing workflows?
